Abstract

Abstract

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) play a vital role in Indonesia's economy, contributing significantly to employment absorption and Gross Domestic Product (GDP). However, MSMEs often face challenges in accessing adequate external funding, such as bank loans or investments from formal financial institutions. Complicated administrative requirements, lack of collateral, and limited financial literacy are among the main obstacles that prevent MSME actors from obtaining external financing sources. In this context, bootstrap financing emerges as an attractive alternative funding strategy by utilizing internal resources such as personal capital, savings, business profits, or the personal assets of business owners. This approach not only offers a practical solution for MSMEs struggling to access formal financing but also encourages financial independence and discipline. This study aims to examine the role and challenges of bootstrap financing in supporting the sustainability of MSMEs in Indonesia using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach. Based on an analysis of 14 relevant journals, the findings show that bootstrap financing offers key benefits such as financial independence, flexibility in business management, and full control over decision-making, enabling MSMEs to survive longer in a competitive market. However, the limited capital available from internal sources also presents a challenge, particularly in terms of business expansion and long-term investment. The study also finds that careful financial management, the use of digital technology for financial recording, and creativity in managing resources are critical success factors in applying this strategy. Overall, although bootstrap financing has its limitations, it can make a significant contribution to the sustainability and growth of MSMEs, especially when combined with alternative funding strategies such as crowdfunding, angel investors, or government programs. This study is expected to offer practical insights for MSME entrepreneurs and policymakers in formulating more efficient, adaptive, and sustainable financing strategies.
